Philip Seymour Hoffman heads up an impressive cast in this comedy drama. read more »
Scripted by Gattaca's director/screenwriter Andrew Niccol, and flawlessly executed by director Peter Weir, this ingenious satirical comedy drama about media omnipotence is both dazzling and sophisticated from audacious start to poignant finale. In a role that reveals his dramatic range, Jim Carrey plays Truman Burbank, star of the world's most popular reality TV show, although Burbank doesn't know it. He thinks he lives in the idyllic island community of Seahaven, but it's just an elaborate set housed in a vast studio, and all his family and friends are really actors. How that realisation slowly dawns and spurs him on to find out what's real and what's fake in his emotionally confused universe is the stuff of ambitious cinematic brilliance. Carrey gives a suitably restrained performance, and he receives superlative support from Ed Harris (as the programme's creator Christof) and Laura Linney (as Truman's wife, Meryl).
A clever (if implausible) conceit that can be taken several ways: as a satire on our all-controlling media, as a comment on television's pervasiveness, and the way everyone wants to appear on it, or as an instance of situationists' desire to disrupt the s
If like me you find Rubber-Faced comedian Jim Carey's films such as "Liar Liar", "Dumb and Dumber" and "Ace Ventura" childish and dull once the first face-pulling gag is complete, then this could well be a welcome treat for you. Under the current climate of reality tv shows, the story of The Truman Show is quite poignant.
Truman (Jim Carey) is living his happy life in his happy town and his happy job, blissfully unaware that he is fact the soul star of his very own reality tv series - The Truman Show. The film explores the emotions of a man who becomes aware of the situation he is in as he begins to understand his surroundings due to a series of strange incidents.
Jim Carey is completely convincing as Truman and for once does not have a film based around his ability to pull faces!! I was surprised myself, but having watched the film I must admit that Jim Carey is indeed a very talented actor. It is difficult not to feel the frightened emotions of a man who is only just becoming aware of his true existance.
The story is funny, slick and well put together, but it is the performance of Jim Carey that makes it stand out and does truly effect the viewer. After the film, imagine yourself as Truman and think "What would that really be like?".
A must see for all viewers with an imagination.
Jim Carrey for once plays a more down to earth character and pulls it off very well. Truman Show superbly directed by Peter Weir is well paced and very well acted not only by Carrey but with help from Oscar nominated Ed Harris and also Oscar nominated Laura Linney. This is one of those rare films that will leave you wanting more. Essential viewing. Not to be missed even if you dont like Jim Carrey's style in other films you will not be disappointed with this title.
Jim Carrey being very much Jim Carrey. Entertaining if you overlook all the logistical flaws in the concept. But I'm sure something like will appear on the nineO'clock news at some point.
This is an excellent film which sends the message that it doesn't matter how 'controlled' or desperate your life seems you CAN prevail and live the life YOU want if you just persevere.
this film is amazing, one of my favourite all time films, but beware! this film may make you paranoid for weeks.

Truman Burbank lives in Seahaven a world in which he is the only one that doesnt know that hes life is a show. A reality TV show, created by Cristof, and broadcasted live around the world. The film follows Trumans journey of discovering the truth about his life. Peter Weir creates this beautiful psychological drama, taking Jim Carrey away from his usual zany performances.
Peter Weir, the well known Australian director, famous for making films such as: The Mosquito Coast (1986), Dead Poets Society (1989), Green Card (1990), and Fearless (1993), is interested in showing how characters react or behave in isolating or alienating situations; the Truman show is no exception.
Peter Weir creates a perfect, bright town of Seahaven, so overly attractive it becomes oppressive. The cinematography is truly mesmerising and somehow intrusive, as we see Trumans life through a variety of pinhole cameras like buttons, bins, hats, car radio, trombone, pencil sharpener and Trumans bathroom mirror.
The Truman Show is an intriguing and well written film that will appeal to those who are bored of monsters tearing down buildings and superheroes saving the world.
This is an excellent film which sends the message that it doesn't matter how 'controlled' or desperate your life seems you CAN prevail and live the life YOU want if you just persevere.
First film in the Carey cannon (for me) where he breaks from his signature gurning and gets (a litlle) serious.
This film does have a message about intrusive media and what we now call "reality TV" - and tells it well. Mix in love, and friendship, and it turns out as an all round good, decent film.
If Jim Carey might put you off watching this, watch it anyway. Worth watching more than once.
So much could have been done with this concept. But Jim Carrey looks like a longer version of Darren in American TV's bewitched and his acting skills are comparable. A bit of direction and a proper lead actor, Depp, for instance could improve on this imaginative script.
Jim Carrey should stick to pulling funny faces and walking in an amusing manner. The circus perhaps?
absolute gem of a film saw this at the cinema and wanted to see it again could not find it at my 'local' saw it here watched it again with someone who`d not seen it b4 and we loved it all over again. Not one for Carrey fans one for film FANS
Quite simply a modern day classic. Adults & kids enjoy equally - worth watching even when you do know how it's going to end.
