Now I've finally seen it I understand what 'all that fuss was about'!

It is an incredible masterpiece from start to finish. How refreshing it is to escape the usual schmulzy, sentimental and unrealistic 'Hollywood style' romantic musicals. This one elegantly portrays the youthful heartbreaking yearning experienced in 'true love' juxtaposed by the realities of circumstance, practicality and the desire for security. 'I would have died for him ... Why am I not dead?' The message is a harsh one and yet the visual and musical effect is enchantingly magical and fairytale like...quite a paradox.

Catherine Deneuve is stunningly beautiful in her role as she subtly transforms from an innocent idealistic young lover when confronted by the uncertainty of her future security, to a woman of seemingly brutal resolve.

This is by no means a typical musical or opera, every word is sung throughout and yet after a while I became so absorbed by the story that I barely noticed.

The use of colour throughout is stylishly evocative of this era but in an overwhelmingly kitch way.

It is a poignant simple love story which will haunt you and leave quite an impression long after you have watched it. It really is beyond comparism.

Watched this film under recommendation, claimed to be this person's favourite film. Massive disappointment. Story line predictable, characters under-developed, in fact verging on shallow. Singing pointless. If this was his favourite film, I am intrigued to see what he classes as his worst film.

A masterpiece in every respect. If you are not both swept away and deeply moved by this film, you have either forgotten what it is to be young and in love, or are still too young to have endured real pain. But is anyone ever that young? Even my children, who are not easily entranced, and do not suffer subtitles gladly, were enraptured from the opening scene with its jazz dialogue. Demy's use of colour and decor makes Amelie look pale and flat by comparison.

I didn't really know what to expect, other than that this is a very famous film. It was WONDERFUL! So French..... Just enchanting from beginning to end. Great music, that just flows along with the story. Compared to most musicals of the era, where people act normally and then burst into song, this just flows in a continuum. You can't help smiling that people, who say they're hard up, live in such style, but this is still artistic escapism.

I was rather thrown at first by the fact that all the dialogue is sung, but once I got used to that I loved this film (and some of the songs are wonderful!) If you enjoy a love story with just the right amount of sentiment, this is for you (you may need a hanky)

Imagine Vincente Minelli's 'An American in Paris' mixed with Elia Kazan's 'Splendour in the Grass' and a touch of Stan Barstow's harsh realism thrown in!
