Just godawful.By Northernsky (318 reviews) from Halifax , 15 Feb 2010What are the chances that if you were hunting a serial killer you would catch him in the act of murdering one of his victims? Even Clarice Starling or Will Graham couldnt manage that and if it was so effortless the police would do it all the time .Well I presume they would. But that is premise behind The Ungodly ( which sounds like a supernatural horror but is nothing of the sort ) which is meant to be serious expose of the psychology of a serial murderer and therefore our obsession with them but spouts the usual serial killer clichés ( terrible childhood / otherwise living a normal life etc ) and makes it seem as dull as well my life except with a bit more blood and screaming .
Mickey Gravatski (Wes Bentley) is a budding filmmaker with an obsession about a murderer who is active in his city. His main objective, which unbelievably comes to fruition, is to catch the killer in the act and on film. His secondary goal, arguably even more unlikely is to blackmail the killer James Lemac (Mark Borkowski), into being the subject of a documentary .
The flaws with this are so obvious they might as well be driven around town on one of those big sandwich board vans . Not to Mickey though who was obviously looking the other way when the van passed by ( probably filming an alien abduction or something ) and comes over all surprised when Lemac starts messing with his head and doing things he shouldnt which put the filmmakers loved ones in danger.
Director Thomas Dunn seems to want to make a serious psychological study of the killer but then runs out of ideas half way through and resorts to the usual harem scarum b-grade horror/thriller guff we have all seen hundreds of times before. A queasy mixture of Henry Portrait Of A Serial Killer and Man Bites Dog but without any of the raw power of the former or the pitch black satirical bravado of the latter The Ungodly ends up a preposterous slice of hokum rather than the commanding examination of a killers psyche it so desperately strives to be. The fact it is not even entertaining hokum is the final nail in it,s tawdry coffin.

Not too goodBy MsLilly (265 reviews) from London , 30 Dec 2009This had some genuienly scary moments but it wasn't enough to push this along into a brilliant horror film, it lacked feel to it, it looked good, the acting was ok but just was missing something that I couldn't put my finger on.
Mmm, What Was This?By filmsaremypassion (149 reviews) from Bexhill , 23 Dec 2009The write up sounded quite good so I rented it and watched it last night. A young man discovers a brutal murder, then contacts the murderer and plans to do a film about his life. It got off with a good start that fell to disappointment and turned really dull. Even the ending either made no sense or just wasn't good enough. Sure, some moments were disturbing and chilling to hear and see but where was the real fear that the write up promised? The only person I knew in this was Wes Bentely, he's a good actor and pops up every now and then with some good films but this must be his worst. I didn't feel anything for the characters, there were no subtitles so I had to turn it up and down so I could hear their very low speaking (can be very annoying). I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone who would find it boring within twenty minutes, don't be fooled by the cover and the story, it's dosen't bring the goods so it will get a low rating from me.
GIVE THIS A GOBy Fannyblot (103 reviews) from Holmfirth England , 28 Oct 2009This was very good, it is a little slow to start with but when it gets going it is really good.
