Bryan Singer's film, the Usual Suspects is one of those rare gems that demands multiple viewings to confirm how great it was. Five felons are lined up and interrogated in a New York Police station and afterwards in their cell, they plot to get back at the NYPD. It soon becomes apparent however that a mythical crime lord, Keyser S?ze (a name that strikes fear into the heart of any criminal) is controlling the events that soon surround them. If you haven't already done so, buy this film and watch it, preferably in the wide screen format. The final two minutes consists of the most brilliantly edited piece of footage, soundtrack and theme music in the history of American cinema.

The Usual Suspects is one of the sharpest, most intelligent films I've ever viewed. McQuarrie's script deserved the Oscar it earned and Singer's direction should of gotten him one too. He manages to keep the complex film understandable to most casual viewers and he moves the all-star cast around well. The cast is also great: Spacey deserved his Oscar too, and Gabriel Byrne and Kevin Pollack were also deserving of recognition. This is one suburb film that throws a colourful cast of characters into a maze of well written intrigue and suspense. A personal favourite.

A nice twist in the end - you probably can see it coming eventually but it keeps you guessing for most of the film. Good characters and gripping storyline. Worth staying in for!

  • Postlethwaite Triumphs!

    Rated - 3.0 stars

In this film everyone gets shot, stabbed, raped, chopped up into little bits, etc etc . Your task, if you choose to accept it, is to find out whodunnit and whydunnit. The direction, screen-play and acting are excellent and so the film is entertaining, but ultimately pointless. About half way through the film the ending becomes obvious - no matter. The best part is Pete Postlethwaite. His accent veers wildly between cod Japanese and Pakistani. This performance, worthy of the Chingford ladies netball dramatic society is a triumph and it's worth watching the film for this alone. Quite what Postlethwaite had in mind I have no idea, but then everybody is pretending to be someone else in this film. I can only assume he was sober at the time.

  • Hard to follow

    Rated - 3.0 stars

The use of a full explanation at the end is a good device but ruined the film in this disappointing thriller. The device worked hugelly well for Psycho, an exellent film, but when in use in this, half the time you are wondering 'Whatever is happening' and the next realising the answer to that past question, but by then you have already lost two hours of your life, making it very hard to follow. Although puzzlingly gripping as of how complicated it is, I was disappointed by this as it widely thought to be a great film. Although many bad points, there is good use of cinematograpy, and very good acting from such stars as Gabriel Byrne(Millers Crossing), Kevin Spacey(American Beauty, LA Confidential) and Chazz Palmineteri(A Bronx Tale). Overall, not Bad.
