If anyone tells you the American version is better than this original, hit them repeatedly with a half-defrosted pizza until they retract their comments, thus saving them from a misguided life.

    Suspense by the bucketload.

  • Gripping, unusual thriller

Despite the visuals being somewhat dated, this is a tense thriller that stands the test of time. I defy anyone not to find both the initial setup and final act profoundly disturbing.

  • Nothing exciting

I'm not sure why so many people seem to rate this highly. It's quite dull. The ending isn't anything original. The characters are rather one-dimensional. The way it's shot isn't anything to write home about - it reminded me of a tv movie or an episode of bergerac. I feel a bit cheated of the last couple of hours. I'd give it a wide berth if I were you. And if the american version isn't as good...

Graphic designer's girlfriend disappears when they stop at gas station. He spends 3 years in turmoil tormented by loss of her and mystery. Then he begins to see light at end of tunnel so to speak. American remake had sort of happy ending. Nothing of such in this original. If you have seen any Belgian films you will know what I mean. Hitchcock meets Poe. Psychological. Template for numerous noughties horrors. Teachers have diabolical minds.

a film for true film fans who possess the ability either to understand Spanish or the ability to read and watch a film at the same time, this film is a true classic with a horrible, twisted and nasty ending which I very much enjoyed and goes against the grain of so many Hollywood happy endings

  • You would never guess the ending

The relatively slow and detailed progression of the story only serves to maximize the shock of the completely unexpected conclusion.
