This documentary is probably not for everyone - if you are looking for an introduction to the war and its causes you may be a little disappointed. The format is familiar - an introduction and narration from the presenter, followed by library footage and interviews with many who were involved. These are extremely well put together, and give them a chance to explore their views - both before and after the war - the contrast is fascinating. Perhaps one of the most tragic is by an army recruit sent out in the last year of the war - 'I was sent out there and we knew that America was pulling out - my entire purpose during my tour was to stay alive.' At least he managed it when so many others did not.
The non-chronological format along with the reasonably impartial tone make this a good documentary - with exploration of tactics as well as motivations giving an excellent insight into the way the war was fought from both sides. More Vietnamese input would have been useful, but would have been difficult. For someone coming at this subject with a little background knowledge this should be very rewarding, but would also serve as a good introduction to the subject. Well shot, interestingly put together and altogether a good series.
