Pretty mediocre film that is best avoided
By roncoach (365 reviews) from suffolk , 06 Nov 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
Not very often I disagree with Maestro Halliwell, but I found this film pretty poor.
I'd read the best-selling book and been disappointed by amateurish writing, poor characters and no sense of 'story'.
And the film duly 'followed suit'.
This was a bad period for the British Film Industry in its death-throes........even the revered Hammer Films and 'Carry On's' had degenerated into awful vehicles which belied their wonderful earlier pedigree.
From about 1970, through much of the 70s, British films were normally things to be avoided ( sweeping generalisation, plenty of exceptions, I know). We started being lumbered with the dreaded 'Confessions Of A Window Cleaner', 'Percy', etc etc etc.
The Virgin Soldiers does not plummet to such dregs but it's not exactly what we'd been used to from Britain during its film excellence at Ealing, the 60s' Hammer films, and many others.
This film sums up the start of the 'rot'. OK, it isn't the worst film I've ver seen, by a long way. But, even so, it has so little to offer. And the useless Hywell Bennett seemed to be in so many of these mediocre movies.
My advice is to leave this one alone and go for a different film from a different era.- Was this review helpful to you?

Conscript life in Malayia.
By Ellen Stevenson from Dumfries. , 20 Nov 2006Suppose this is how conscripts would find Singapore and Malayia in the early 1950's. Sometimes comic and sometimes tragic coming of age.- Was this review helpful to you?

Commando
By RONALD MOLYNEUX from England , 26 May 2006This film was only about a 50% true reflection on life in Malaya at that time. So watch it tongue in cheek. I know.
I was there with 42 Commando Royal Marines.- Was this review helpful to you?
