    An evocative tale of adolescence

Beneath the surface of good looks (among them the beguiling Olivia Thirlby and still-fabulous Famke Janssen) and comedic appeal, this movie reveals a sensitively filmed, bittersweet tale of adolescence and a nostalgic look at 1990s New York. The unlikely relationship between protagonist Luke Shapiro and his shrink, Dr Squires, played to perfection by Ben Kingsley, is central to the film, which also tells the story of sexual exploration and the conflicts of adulthood. The characters are what make this film, as well as the sometimes hilarious moments, particularly between Luke and Dr Squires, as each attempt to come to terms with their inner agonies and the coming of age.

The 1990s hiphop soundtrack and points of reference by characters also evoke a recent popular culture, which serve as reminders of how short-lived youth is to those of us who still think the 1990s was not that long ago.

Suprisingly Funny & V Good Movie

Wasn't too sure what to make of it at first, then gradually realised this is an awesome movie, thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend to all of my friends, perhaps not parents though, not that it was offensive, I just don't think they would appreciate it quite so much as someone who was a teenager/twentysomething in the '90's. Great acting made the 2 main male characters extremely likeable.

ps. don't bother renting it if you don't appreciate weed!

The Wackness: Jonathan Levine and Olivia Thirlby Interview

    • 26 Aug 2008

We hustled whiz-kid director Jonathan Levine and gorgeous leading lady Olivia Thirlby into giving us the inside track on new coming-of-age comedy The Wackness. They let us into Sir Ben Kingsley’s sage-like mind, revealed the perfect mix tape, and exposed Olivia’s man-eating tendencies… LOVEFiLM: Jonathan, how much of the story in The Wackness is autobiographical? Jonathan Levine: None of that drug business ever happened, and I never had a Ben Kingsley character in my life. It& Read more
