  • An evocative tale of adolescence

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Beneath the surface of good looks (among them the beguiling Olivia Thirlby and still-fabulous Famke Janssen) and comedic appeal, this movie reveals a sensitively filmed, bittersweet tale of adolescence and a nostalgic look at 1990s New York. The unlikely relationship between protagonist Luke Shapiro and his shrink, Dr Squires, played to perfection by Ben Kingsley, is central to the film, which also tells the story of sexual exploration and the conflicts of adulthood. The characters are what make this film, as well as the sometimes hilarious moments, particularly between Luke and Dr Squires, as each attempt to come to terms with their inner agonies and the coming of age.

The 1990s hiphop soundtrack and points of reference by characters also evoke a recent popular culture, which serve as reminders of how short-lived youth is to those of us who still think the 1990s was not that long ago.

  • Whacky? Yes but strictly for the boys!

In common with another reviewer, I chose this because of Ben Kingsley's prominence and I agree he put in a stomping performance in a potentially tricky role. However I think the film is only really going to be appreciated by adolescent males.

Quirky but somehow realistic film with a few unexpected laugh out loud moments that are subtly but gloriously hilarious. Ben Kingsley is fantastic. Thoroughly recommended.

If you need your films fast paced, full of action from the beginning and hard hitting then don't watch this. But if you have patience enough to watch a film develop, build an empathy for the characters and allow the story to build slowly and naturally into something beautiful you will not be disappointed. This film just gets better as it progresses. The acting is highly believable, the one liners fantastic and the soundtrack awesome! This film is witty, beautiful, poignant, immature and totally heartwarming. Anyone who has ever been a teenager should watch this, anyone who has ever gone slightly against the grain should watch this. Anyone who has ever felt the rest of the world is crazy should watch this and anyone who has ever been in love and been rejected should watch this. So watch it!
