A contemporary drama set in Washington, D.C., The Walker centers around Carter Page (Harrelson), a well-heeled and popular socialite who serves as confidant, companion, and card partner to some of the capitol's leading ladies. These pampered women are married to the most powerful men in America, and when their husbands are too busy running the country to attend to their wives, they turn to their 'best friend' Carter, for warmth, wit, and wisdom.
Carter's loyalty is tested when his dearest friend (Scott Thomas) finds herself on the brink of a scandal that could destroy her reputation and her husband's career. Offering to cover for her, Carter suppresses incriminating evidence, only to find himself the chief suspect in a criminal investigation. Suddenly, this well-connected man-about-town is a pariah, hounded by the police and forced to find the true culprit and clear his name. More importantly, he must re-examine whether it is important to be accepted by a society based on betrayal, hypocrisy, and corruption.

Do not rent this if you expect an exciting thriller. Woody Harelson is good, as is the acting in general, but the pacing is terrible. My first single star goes to The Walker.
This appeared and disappeared at the flicks before I had any chance to decide whether I wanted to see it or not, so I was quite intrigued to get a shot of it as soon as it came out on dvd.
And crikey, this was definitely worth the wait. This is Schrader on top form, with a crackling script - great plot (a twisty-turny DC-set conspiracy-murder mystery), a broad array of grotesque/melancholic characters (politicians, slick businessmen, and their wives), who spew forth sparkling dialogue.
The cast are all at the top of their game - none more so than Mister Harrelson, in what must be a career best.
A top movie, that provokes with its DC politiko observations, but never to the detriment of the entertainment.
