The War Bride

During the London Blitz, two childhood friends fall for Canadian soldiers. Lily (Anna Friel, THE LAND GIRLS) marries her man and becomes pregnant, like so many young women at the time, just as the father is posted abroad. She emigrates with her young baby to Canada as a 'war bride' to stay with her husband's unwilling family on their remote farm to eagerly await her husband's homecoming. From a director who has cut his teeth in TV, with fine support from Brenda Fricker and Molly Parker THE WAR BRIDE is a powerful drama.

Anna Friel has problems choosing decent roles in good movies and this doesn't change her run of duff luck. Smacking of TV drama rather than film, this UK/Canadian co-production details the experiences of two London lasses who marry Canadian soldiers during the Blitz. Lily (Friel) and her daughter are subsequently shipped over to Canada to live with husband Aden Young's family until his return. However, Young's mother Brenda Fricker and sister Molly Parker fail to clutch her to their bosoms and it's up to Friel to win them — and the entire community — over. Uneven performances and a lightweight plot combine to make this forgettable drama just wash over you.

War is hell...and so are families

Anna Friel's character meets and quickly marries Aden Young's Canadian soldier during World War II, and before she knows it she's off to Canada - with their baby daughter in tow - to live with his family. She is not given the best of receptions...

This is a charming little movie which has modest ambitions but which also achieves them with a minimum of fuss and bother. Friel is well cast as the young woman forced to change her life by unforeseen circumstances, and as her new family, Brenda Fricker and Molly Parker give their characters a depth which isn't always present in the script.

If at times the storyline is a little cliched, and the direction is simplistic, this doesn't detract from the pleasures to be found from viewing the film. The photography is surprisingly effective, and it moves along at an easy pace which allows the cast to breathe life into their roles and make them more fully rounded.

By turns touching, affecting and rewarding, The War Bride succeeds in presenting an aspect of the war which few of us today will be aware of. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

    Better than expected

I enjoyed this film, possibly because it was set at the time when I was of a similar age. I liked that era when films had stars that did not mumble and there wasn't interminable loud background music. Life was very hard then especially for girls meeting their hearthrob lovers during the war and travelling to a land faraway only to find that all was not milk and honey.
