Westerns starring John Wayne and Kirk Douglas approached the genre from very different directions. It's not surprising, therefore, that there's an uneasy tension behind the pair's bonhomie in this rugged comedy adventure. Yet nobody was better at directing this kind of romp than Burt Kennedy, who not only exploits the rivalry between his stars, but also gets superior supporting performances from Bruce Cabot, Keenan Wynn and Howard Keel (cunningly cast as an acerbic American Indian). The action might have been a little more robust, but the wagon itself (with its swivelling turret and machine gun) is a real scene-stealer.
Kennedy is very nearly at his tongue-in-cheek best in this Western which affably carries on the mood and manner of... read more on Time Out
Exhilarating but simply-plotted action Western with strong comedy elements and a cast of old reliables.
The has to be (true grit aside) the best movie made with John Wayne, the action is brilliant, the acting flawless the scenery awesome and the comedy tastfully done, the almost gentlemanly way Wayne and Douglas portray their dislike for each other while having to work together is unusually convincing if at times funny, the tension runs high all through the movie and the action rarely is dull. I recommed this movie to all Wayne (or for that matter) western fans. Brilliant
Excellent film.

If you like John Wayne then you will like this. I do not think its the best of his films but enjoyable to watch
This is classic John Wayne. You either love him or loathe him and this is a must for John Wayne fans and western fans. But I found this film to be long winded and not very well scripted.
I am a big John Wayne fan, but I did not like this - it was terrible!
a typical john wayne film, really good storyline and great supporting cast with kirk douglas hitting it of with the duke
John Wayne and Kirk Douglas in the same film who could ask for more?
One of the rarely shown on TV John Wayne films so a pleassure to watch again.
One of the best John Wayne films with plenty of action and humour
