    [Highly rated reviewer]

The War, sleepy and poetic in tone, invokes thoughts of similar, but superior movies such as Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption.

It just seems like everyone involved is trying too hard. Costner is relegated to supporting a pre-Lord Of The Rings Elijah Wood in a massively underwritten role, one which should have been the driving force for the film. He's the Andy Duphrane of the movie, but with a quarter of the lines.

That said, it is immacualatly shot and acted by all concerned. The general message - 'war bad, peace good' is just about conveyed through the plot, though it was played out a little obviously for my liking.

Overall, not a bad film. Fans of Costner will be interested, and its interesting to see that Elijah Wood could act long before that damn ring. Worth a watch, certainly, just don't expect that uplifting feeling.

  • A Costner movie that wasn't too bad...

    Rated - 3.0 stars
By Melisa Tupou from HArrow, UK , 07 Feb 2006
I'll say it up front - I think Wood is the most extraordinary young actor of his, or any other, generation, and he proves to be the shinning star in this rather quaint film about the Summer holidays of one, dirt poor, family.

This movie is My Girl, Stand by Me and Paradise all rolled into one - with Costner as the Vietnam Vet father trying to come to terms with his deamons and get a job. The family is as disfunctional as any poor white trash family - and their plight over the Summer holidays is narrated by the daughter.

The war in The War rages on all fronts - the children are at war with another poor white trash family of imbreds - their father is at war with his memories and the family is at war with the poor hand life has dealt them.

this is a good film, if a little sappy and predictable at times, that the whole family will enjoy.
