Asif Kapadia's ...
By steve#69 from POOLE , 25 Mar 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Asif Kapadia's Anglo-Indian movie with Ifran Khan as the titular Warrior who works for a greedy landowner who's response to any village that can't pay its taxes is to send out his men to burn, loot and murder them.
Khan has grown tired of this and doesn't want his son Katiba growing up with this so leaves. The Landowner doesn't let anyone depart his service and sends the rest of the gang after him.
Katiba is captured and murdered before his horrified Father's eyes - he goes into grief-induced shock and is taken away by a local blacksmith.
You then expect a standard revenge story but he has renounced the sword and heads into the mountains in a spiritual journey.
He meets and is befriended by Rabia,a young boy who's parents he may well have killed and the two undertake a surrogate Father/Son relationship.
With a old blind woman who seems to know more about them than they know themselves and it all ends up in a deserted mountain village where scores are finally settled.
Its a beautifully paced piece - Khan brings a quiet dignity to the role expressing himself mainly visually(the script is muted to the point of subliminal) and once you get into its rythym it has a haunting spiritual quality(enhanced by the photography and sombre score) that belies the fact that is is Kapadia's first feature.
Not at all what I expected and all the more refreshing for that- Was this review helpful to you?

(27)Moody and watchable
By Misteruckie (12 reviews) , 27 Sep 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
Ifran Khan looks the part, with his stern expressions and thoughtful eyes. A bit of a slow-burn of a film, with a pretty simplistic plot. But if you're in the mood, the great photography provides an interesting, moody ambiance, with some good acting and interesting characters.
At the end of the film though, you're not left with anything really substantial to ponder about.- Was this review helpful to you?

To Save in My Heart
By a customer from London , 09 Jul 2009If you ever dreamt of the stillness of the Himalayas; if you ever longed to smell the damp sadness of the pre-winter mountains; if you ever wished, the world to stop to hear the silence of nothing this movie is for you.
After I watched this movie, one thing was clear to me I simply could not define this movie by actors performance; I was to focus on the whole package of music, visual and actors play as it placed me in a meditative state for an hour and a half and I took that gift personally. Those of you who experienced wonders of meditation will surely understand if I state that this result only is too impeccable to dilute upon whether this movie is a new classic or not.
The movie did not have many dialogs and I could not stop wandering whether humans brain was less cluttered centuries ago; or is it because a soldiers mind is of a similar nature; what is it that makes you go silent?; go beyond sulking, beyond regret
However, I must admit that the music was exquisite- Was this review helpful to you?
