This vivid and violent gangland thriller from director Walter Hill is, essentially, an urban western. It centres on a New York gang whose members battle their way back to home turf following the murder of a rival gang leader during a ceasefire meeting. Despite the gritty storyline and locations, there's a doomed, romantic feel to the film and a poetic quality to the exhilarating fight scenes. Hill sketches the characters with some sympathy and is rewarded with excellent performances from the largely unknown cast, led by Michael Beck and Drugstore Cowboy's James Remar.
Slick exploitation movie, a retelling, in urban teenage terms, of Xenophon's epic retreat with his Ten Thousand following the death of Cyrus; the pace is fast, and the action violent, though stylised.
The story concerns a small street gang from Coney Island, who attend a huge summit of all the gangs in New York. When Cyrus, the gang lord in charge is murdered, the Warriors take the blame. They rush home to Coney Island, with every other gang, plus the N.Y.P.D. on their trail. For all the violence in this movie, there is a high camp factor. Most of this comes from the various colourful gangs. There are the High Hats, the Boppers, the Punks, the Orphans, and of course, the Baseball Furies.
The Warriors is an entertaining film, but does lag in parts, and the plot is not the greatest ever written, but, the action scenes are incredible, and some of the dialog is highly amusing, but there are some boring stretches to battle through. The music is superb and the movie is worth watching for this alone.
just like i remeber it when it first came out
its lost bone of its impact
well worth watching
