    [Highly rated reviewer]

The story concerns a small street gang from Coney Island, who attend a huge summit of all the gangs in New York. When Cyrus, the gang lord in charge is murdered, the Warriors take the blame. They rush home to Coney Island, with every other gang, plus the N.Y.P.D. on their trail. For all the violence in this movie, there is a high camp factor. Most of this comes from the various colourful gangs. There are the High Hats, the Boppers, the Punks, the Orphans, and of course, the Baseball Furies.

The Warriors is an entertaining film, but does lag in parts, and the plot is not the greatest ever written, but, the action scenes are incredible, and some of the dialog is highly amusing, but there are some boring stretches to battle through. The music is superb and the movie is worth watching for this alone.

  • An old school classic

The Warriors was quite a daring film when it was released in 1979 and still seems a little daring, even to this day. There isn’t that much gore (I think I counted only one shot involving blood, which is a mere red drop in the ocean when you compare the film to the average zombie movie of today which is filled with CGI blood spurts) and the profanity isn’t half as bad as you’d hear in a Tarrintino film. However, the fact that the ‘heroes’ we’re supposed to root for are actually pretty unlikeable, consisting of a gang who gets by on thieving and beating people up, it means that there’s few truly ‘good’ characters to identify with. The Warriors themselves are a New York gang who are framed for the murder of another gang leader and forced to go on the run to get back to their part of the city. Some people have criticised the film for being repetitive. To be fair, they do have a point. Much of the film is showing the gang escaping one rival gang after another. However, the film isn’t that long and, despite there not being that much in the way of a story, the action is pretty tense. If you’re a fan of crime dramas/thrillers (there’s not that much here that could be described as ‘action’) then give this one a go. It’s dark and moody and definitely a sign of the time. Would it get made today? Possibly, but the true seventies feel of it gives it some added kudos that a remake would never have.

This cult classic is one of my favourite films of all time. The story is based on Xenephon's Persian Expedition of 400 BC. A powerful New York gang leader gathers together representatives of all the city's gangs. The Warriors are trapped in hostile territory after the city wide truce unexpectedly comes to an end. Like the Greek heroes in the original they have to fight their way home, trouble is everyone wants them dead!

As some of the other contributors have noted this film has a fantastic score, superb action scenes (no CGI!) and some great dialogue. Its not Shakespeare though so don't expect acting from Sir Kenneth Branagh and be prepared for some violent scenes. Suspend your belief, sit back and enjoy this great movie.

The acting isn't always the best, but the tale of the framed Warriors bopping their way back to Coney, battling various misfits (the Baseball Furies) and losers (the hapless Orphans), still raises a smile. The radio show giving out information on their progress and location is one of the best linking instruments in the movies.

<Dystopian future, gangs rule, Big chief calls meeting, tragedy, The Warriors get blamed, on the run, “Come out to plaaaaaaay!”

Cult but almost so bad that it’s good drama with its cringe worthy jive talking, awful acting, dreadful dialogue and comedic fight scenes.

I can see why it got such a following but it just comes across as so dated now it’s hard to take it seriously and the music isn’t much better either.>

Great film, The fact the cast is unknown actors is a great part of this film for me, also the style and dress codes of the different gangs are unique! also one of the best intro dialog to a film I have ever seen 'Can You Dig It?!!' Defo in my top 10
