    [Highly rated reviewer]

A superb character driven movie. I saw it years ago on Channel Four & remembered it fondly, but I wasn?t prepared for just how good it is. The clich?d basic story line, a rag-bag of disparate characters ultimately formed into a well oiled fighting machine, may have been done many times, but surely never done better. Some of the credit certainly goes to Eric Ambler?s writing & Carol Reed?s direction, but my vote goes to the superb cast of actors. It would be invidious to pick any one out. Yes Raymond Huntley?s superb, David Niven on top form, but then so are the rest of the company. And you even get goodies like an uncredited appearance by Trevor Howard. Wonderful entertainment.

I had not seen this film before and found it very enjoyable, highlighting the problems facing conscripts during WW2 and the training that they had to undertake to make them a fighting unit. Great performances by the British cast.

  • training and warfare the british way

    Rated - 3.0 stars

Had just watched Full Metal jacket again a few days before and this follows the same path of spending more of the film on the training than the fighting.

Despite the two Sergeant-majors being different in the way they mentally and physically abuse the recruits they are still thought of as bullies by them.

The conscripts are generally unhappy about being called up but slowly gel and take up the challenges after all this is morale-booster while the war was on.

Well scripted and a great cameo from Peter Ustinov.

Even though it was filmed before D Day , this is a brilliant film , typical of the the genre , but well acted, and made one proud to be British , even if that's not terribly PC these days ....
