Carson McCullers's novel is vividly brought to life by Oscar-winner Anna Paquin (The Piano). In Georgia during the summer of 1944, a feisty, 12-year-old tomboy comes of age with the guidance of family housekeeper Alfre Woodard, who offers wisdom and solace. As her family prepare for the girl's beloved older brother's wedding, she must cope with her feelings of abandonment and jealousy. David Rintels's script and Fielder Cook's direction are more straightforward and perfunctory than the 1952 film version, but this timeless material retains enough magic to charm all ages.
