A social-climbing young woman gains a foothold in the late Victorian upper crust by virtue of her wealthy and cultured aunt's social connections, but finds marriage to her true love, a poor hack journalist, incompatible with her new station. She cooks up a plan to use her lover to bilk a guileless and fabulously wealthy American woman of her considerable fortune, but putting the scheme into action sparks painful conflicting emotions. A sleek adaptation of the eponymous Henry James novel, with the source material's bitterness tempered by a more sympathetic characterization of its heroine. Academy Award nominations: 4, including Best Actress--Helena Bonham Carter; Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and Best Cinematography.

Newcomer Hossein Amini was Oscar nominated for his adaptation of one of Henry James's most difficult novels, and director Iain Softley also succeeds in doing James justice in this visually arresting, lyrical and dark film. Helena Bonham Carter gives her best performance to date as Kate, a modern miss who encourages her rough lover Merton (Linus Roache) to fall for dying heiress Millie Theale (Alison Elliott) in a bid to climb the social ladder. The friendship that develops between Kate and Millie and the genuine love that Millie arouses in Merton complicates the callous scheme and threatens to destroy them all.
An updated version of Henry James that takes the basic narrative but little else from the original novel; despite its faltering period sense, it succeeds on its own account as a modest drama of a triangular love affair.
Helena's performance is great! The complex among 3 characters and the whole atmosphere cannot be deployed better!
Sorry, I found this very boring! what else can I say.apart from I stopped watching it as it was going nowhere.
