Drama as it should be
By Maryon Jeane from Clive, Shropshire , 15 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
I've always loved this play, but would not have thought it could transfer to the screen. Amazingly, it does in this film. The cast could not be better, and they really work together well. No one character is unbelievable or overdone (not easy with a play rather than a film script ). It would be so easy to overact this drama and/or go for the easy sympathy of the (roughly true) story, but this mistake is not made here. The climax of the play is a one-character speech (action taking place offstage in the classical Greek way), but even this is not only accomplished but succeeds. Moving and riveting - but not if you're into thrills, sex and car chases.- Was this review helpful to you?

Worth it
By Vgray (7 reviews) from Totnes , 17 Oct 2011Outstanding play and cast, beautifully performed. Translates to film well, despite clearly being a theatre script. Bit slow start but builds well.- Was this review helpful to you?

Anti-climax
By Lauretta (26 reviews) from Bristol , 12 Jul 2008Excellent cast, excellent plot, really well acted and presented but massive anti-climax at the end which I found really disappointing. This is fully intentional, but I felt a let down nonetheless. Still worth it though as the film explores important themes and makes some very good points - thought provoking.- Was this review helpful to you?

The Winslow Boy
By a customer from Leeds, England , 30 Dec 2005I don't usually like re-makes of classics. Robert Donat was the ultimate Robert Morton for me until I saw Jeremy Northam's portrayal. This is an excellent re-make and viewers new to this story should stick with it - it is worth watching for the last line!- Was this review helpful to you?
