Masterful, Must See Television
By Al80 (59 reviews) from Brighton, England , 23 Aug 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
Arguably more important, polished, and compelling than its largely incomparable stable mate "The Sopranos", "The Wire" is an essential, seminal piece of work.
By examining both the drug trade itself in intense detail, as well as the difficulty of sustaining an efficient fight against it in post-9/11 America, the programme delivers the most raw and honest depictions of both.
There are no easy answers or distinctions here - it takes the frustrating inevitability of the drug scenario as a given, and focuses solely on creating plotlines and characters that involve and grip.
In doing this, the creators of this show have invited more questions and debate than a million other mealy-mouthed preachathons.

(213)Wired In
By Grenville (26 reviews) , 12 May 2013I liked the first three episodes so much that I immediately bought the five series set. It operates on several levels but, at its heart, is a human story of people trying to make sense of a dangerous world.- Was this review helpful to you?

Drama at its very best from Ridley Scott
By Vdubbman (64 reviews) , 28 Feb 2013I have watched every series and have been gripped from day 1. Pure genius drama with masterly observation from Ridley Scott, of the daily life of people from the 'projects' to the Mayor of Baltimore's Office and all the corruption that exists at every level in between. Possibly the best drama I have seen to come out of the US because of the way if informs, entertains and shocks all at the same time.- Was this review helpful to you?

I'm hooked
By BigBadDon (1 review) , 08 Feb 2013The first episode is very hard going but once the scene is set and you get a grip of the characters, the plot unfolds. I'm hooked!! Very cleverly written but would recommend having the subtitles on as the language used is colloquial to Baltimore- Was this review helpful to you?

It's Concentrated Fiction (but only just)
By justanotherhub (3 reviews) , 30 Jan 2013After years of studying the social sciences in a community with few job prospects, The Wire was the perfect pay-off. A proved marriage of book-smarts and street-smarts which comes like a call of relief - Some-one has been paying attention! With nuanced direction and structural examinations and 'policy arcs', it's the ultimate genre mash-up and styles a documentary that's only just fiction. Not everyone's cup of tea, which is exactly why it's so vital.- Was this review helpful to you?

Almost as good as Breaking Bad....
By Siliconedude (1 review) , 16 Jan 2013People giving this title anything less than 4 1/2 stars have no appreciation for quality TV and should not be allowed to own a device that would otherwise show this, or similar material. The acting is top notch, cases are great and 'storytelling' is quality. 5 Stars all the way, just below Breaking Bad.- Was this review helpful to you?
