Every bit as good as you've heard
By maxwurr (122 reviews) from Middlesex , 02 Jan 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
When The Guardian's Charlie Brooker goes on and on about The Wire as being the best American TV show of the last twenty years, he can get a bit repetitive. You'd also be entitled to wonder why, if The Wire is such an amazing piece of work, it only gets a UK airing on the obscure FX Channel rather than one of the big mainstream stations. But your reservations would be totally unjustified. The Wire is every bit as good as you've been told and better. Sure, it'll take you three episodes before you have a clue what is going on, but the investment pays dividends.
I can't remember a drama serial from either side of the Atlantic with such depth and emotional range and that delivers trenchant social comment along with a narrative tempo that suffers not one jot from a huge cast of characters and a complex plotline. Unsentimental, brave and moving - I guarantee you will not regret it, but start with season one and work your way through otherwise you really won't have a clue what's going on! Roll on season five!- Was this review helpful to you?

(54)Patience is a virtue and richly rewarded.
By Alimo (1 review) , 02 Mar 2013I have enjoyed every series but Season 4 is increadible. There are no gimicks and no pull ins to grip you from the first moments. You just have to watch it and let it evolve. I have no idea if this is what really happens on the streets of Baltimore but the reality of the characters and what happens to them is devastating. No one ever gets let off the hook (and lives) just because they are 'good' and in the right and we have been made to care about this person and no one ever gets their comeuppance just because they are 'bad'. I don't even try and follow all the complex plot twists anymore, again I now know just to wait and it will become clear when it's time for me to know. In other programme they let you stay just ahead of the characters so you feel clever. In The Wire I'm usually as far behind the real detectives and police in working out what is going on as I really should be. Some of the relationships between individual cops and the drug dealing kids are especially amazingly portrayed. The police show real care and humanity and you see how totally trapped the kids are even if this is not the life they want. Every character is multi-dimensionaland in some cases has taken over 3 series to develop. Our favourite characters from series 1-3 are somewhat sidelined and again we just have to deal with it (Where's Jimmy! Where's Keema!) and wait while other more minor characters are brought to the fore and gradually brought into our affections. What other programme would be that brave? I can't watch too many episodes at a time because it's so intense but then I can't stop watching them either. It is brilliant TV and just brilliant. You have to watch it. But if you've not watched 1-3 you have to watch them first. It's a jouney.- Was this review helpful to you?

Seriously good television
By boblets (1 review) , 05 Feb 2013An absolutely fantastic tv series. Every single moment of this show is priceless. The actors/actresses perform perfectly to produce a show which allows you to fully immerse yourself in the gritty reality of life in Baltimore The fast paced and witty urban dialogue can take some getting used to, however, persistence is key here. You will be rewarded in watching (in my opinion) a piece of television which may never be beaten in terms of story, characters and setting. My opinion of The Wire is THAT high.- Was this review helpful to you?

Sit back, relax, enjoy
By a customer , 29 Nov 2012Simply absorbing tv! Great script, great characters. Just some great stories told over 5 seasons!! They don't seem to make em like this anymore, too busy writing the 43minute cliffhanger types!- Was this review helpful to you?

If you're looking at this, you're probably already in love with The Wire and nothing I say here will have any effect on anybody.
I'm writing this review to add my opinion that this is the best season of The Wire and, therefore, the best season of television ever produced.- Was this review helpful to you?
