Sheer Brilliance!By a customer from London , 18 Sep 2008
[Highly rated reviewer]If you are not already an addict, you can believe the hype. The Wire is simply the best TV series ever made. It even trumps other HBO greats such as the Sopranos and Deadwood.
You get believable and morally complex characters, wonderful acting and direction, an epic story arc, superb writing, political and social issues (with no PC-ness), and even a cool soundtrack.
The good news is that you need to start with the First Season. The bad news is that you may not get out of the house for a couple of months.

Feel the heat, watch The Wire.By Greybutfit (1 review) , 06 Oct 2013This takes you down and dirty, it lifts you up to sky, then pulls your emotions through your soul. It becomes more than just another Cop show once you dive into it.
Gritty Social CommentaryBy w14taxi (1 review) from London , 04 Oct 2012Without doubt the best series I have ever seen. A tremendous social commentary on the failings and corruption of western society. Superbly crafted and very well written and cast. My brother has been raving about this for the longest time, and I must admit I caught on real late.
I have just completed all 5 series and have not been disappointed with any of them.
Live the life of kings, and watch this show.By zoombaby (7 reviews) , 02 Jul 2012The Wire, all five seasons in total, is a breathtaking showcase for the exceptional and outstanding talents assembled in cast and crew.
The literary sensibility the show possess (to me The Wire is more read, than watched) and patience to parse details, revisit themes, explore them thoroughly and bravely, with a coherent structure and narrative thread; is a rarity for U. S. network television.
Unlike other shows flogged to death and stretched beyond their means to deliver meaningful dialogue - both between characters and with the viewing audience - The Wire has a clear beginning and end.
In a sense.
One of the best stories I have seen unfold in any medium, is this show.
Absolutely Goddamned superb.
Another Excellent Series from HBOBy Orchidroom (14 reviews) , 26 Jun 2012The wire is an excellent series. The negative feedback I've heard has been around understanding the street language, but I didn't find it a problem. Great scripts and characters. I watched the whole series with its twists and turns and would thoroughly recommend it. Not exactly heart-warming, but well acted and if you like the Sopranos, will end up like me - wondering why you actually like psychopaths!
If you haven't watched The Wire - you must!By a customer from Nottingham , 22 Feb 2011I cried when we finished the last DVD in this set. Not because anything particularly sad happened but because I now have nothing to do on a Saturday night. What an absolutely brilliant series from start to finish. A friend lent the 1st series to my husband and I can't say I was keen to watch it, but I was hooked from the word go. It was so refreshing to watch a tv programme where the plot lines aren't all neatly tied up at the end of each episode. It must have been a nightmare to follow if you watched it weekly on the television but my idea of heaven was watching 3 episodes back to back. Pure brilliance!
