LOVEFiLM Review The Woman In The Fifth

  • 3 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

Supported by strong performances from Kristin Scott Thomas and Ethan Hawke, The Woman in the Fifth is ultimately let down by its plot.

A total waste of time. Just a load of nothingness. I don't know how we managed to sit through it. My advice would be not to bother.

Based on George Kennedy's book it follows the downfall of an American as comes to terms with his criminal past and realises that its not what he really needs. He just wants to be back the way he was with his daughter/family.

I'd advise anyone intending to watch this film to look first at director Pawlikowski's interview in the extras: this will give you both a massive 'pretentious nonsense' alert and a taste of the incoherence of the film. I haven't read Douglas Kennedy's book, THE WOMAN IN THE FIFTH, but reviews and word of mouth suggest it is an exciting and cleverly plotted, though far-fetched, tale. If this is accurate, then Pawlikowski has rendered it so boring and incoherent that we can't even tell whether it's far-fetched or not. What Ethan Hawke and Kristin Scott Thomas (two admirable actors who usually enhance the films they appear in) are doing in this turgid movie, I can't fathom: it's beneath both their dignity and their bank balances.

One hour and ten minutes into this film and I am just thinking that the plot is developing nicely.....and then the film ends! Did the director run out of money or what? Completely bonkers film. Don't bother.

I was really looking forward to watching this film because I enjoyed Douglas Kennedy's book so much. However apart from the beautiful photographic shots of nature I was very disappointed. It is a dark tale in the book with the same mystery but at least in the book Kennedy explains a little more the reason behind some of the activity. This story went nowhere and was depressing.

Disappointing given the strong cast. I was really looking forward to watching this but like a previous review - am not sure how I stuck it to the end. It seemed to totally lose the plot and lost me about half way through.
