Hammer Horror Makes a Magnificent Return

The Woman in Black gets yet another adaptation, and though elements of the story are different to the play and the original novel this is based on, the 'spirit' of the story is maintained - to thrilling effect.
Daniel Radcliffe casts aside his wand and Hogwarts uniform and takes on the mantle of Arthur Kipps, a recently widowed solicitor tasked with clearing out Eel Marsh. Leaving his son with the nanny he sets off to discover a small village suffering from a terrible curse. And when he finally enters Eel Marsh house he makes terrifying discoveries - with horrendous consequences.
For those familiar with the original tale there is plenty to enjoy in this adaptation, with the changes to the plot keeping it fresh. For everyone else this is an excellent introduction. The only slight problem is Radcliffe's evident youth, which doesn't sit well with the character of a widowed father. But as the film progresses Radcliffe managed to carry the film, albeit with some excellent secondary character performances, especially Ciaran Hinds.
Those who enjoy genuine old-school scares, need look no further than The Woman in Black. It's a magnificent return to form for Hammer productions and will continue to creep you out long after the last credit had rolled.- Was this review helpful to you?

By Kipling (6 reviews) from London , 19 May 2013It is a film to enjoy for those that enjoy a classic ghost story rather than anyone that wants to be shaken up and scared to go to bed alone afterwards. Do not think too much into Daniel Radcliffe's youthful looks for the role, he still does a remarkable job with the character.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dull,Dull & Dull
