Hammer Horror Makes a Magnificent Return
By Vivacia (28 reviews) from London , 13 Feb 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
The Woman in Black gets yet another adaptation, and though elements of the story are different to the play and the original novel this is based on, the 'spirit' of the story is maintained - to thrilling effect.
Daniel Radcliffe casts aside his wand and Hogwarts uniform and takes on the mantle of Arthur Kipps, a recently widowed solicitor tasked with clearing out Eel Marsh. Leaving his son with the nanny he sets off to discover a small village suffering from a terrible curse. And when he finally enters Eel Marsh house he makes terrifying discoveries - with horrendous consequences.
For those familiar with the original tale there is plenty to enjoy in this adaptation, with the changes to the plot keeping it fresh. For everyone else this is an excellent introduction. The only slight problem is Radcliffe's evident youth, which doesn't sit well with the character of a widowed father. But as the film progresses Radcliffe managed to carry the film, albeit with some excellent secondary character performances, especially Ciaran Hinds.
Those who enjoy genuine old-school scares, need look no further than The Woman in Black. It's a magnificent return to form for Hammer productions and will continue to creep you out long after the last credit had rolled.- Was this review helpful to you?

(378)So Spooky
By a customer , 26 Mar 2013Great movie, it was really spooky creeping around an old house. It made us jump many times, and made the hairs on the back of your head stand up, however, it was a good watch. Glad to see Hammer Movies are still making fantastic horror movies.- Was this review helpful to you?

very scary
By a customer , 23 Mar 2013Difficult to rate this film as I was too scared to watch it all the way through. I don't usually choose ghost stories but as I'd already seen the play at a theatre I thought it would be OK. I hadn't expected it to be so well made, so well acted and creepy... don't blame me if you decide to watch it anyway and then have to sleep with the light on.- Was this review helpful to you?

By vicky1987 (1 review) , 20 Mar 2013i had my reservations of this due to being a massive theatre fan, certain expectations i thought could not be fulfilled, but i was pleasantly surprised. the story is set up very well at the begining pulling u in as a viewer. it is very well made wth quite a few creepy part. defo watch if ur into horrors but maybe would be a let down if your a hardcore horror critic.- Was this review helpful to you?
