  • Hammer Horror Makes a Magnificent Return

    [Highly rated reviewer]

The Woman in Black gets yet another adaptation, and though elements of the story are different to the play and the original novel this is based on, the 'spirit' of the story is maintained - to thrilling effect.

Daniel Radcliffe casts aside his wand and Hogwarts uniform and takes on the mantle of Arthur Kipps, a recently widowed solicitor tasked with clearing out Eel Marsh. Leaving his son with the nanny he sets off to discover a small village suffering from a terrible curse. And when he finally enters Eel Marsh house he makes terrifying discoveries - with horrendous consequences.

For those familiar with the original tale there is plenty to enjoy in this adaptation, with the changes to the plot keeping it fresh. For everyone else this is an excellent introduction. The only slight problem is Radcliffe's evident youth, which doesn't sit well with the character of a widowed father. But as the film progresses Radcliffe managed to carry the film, albeit with some excellent secondary character performances, especially Ciaran Hinds.

Those who enjoy genuine old-school scares, need look no further than The Woman in Black. It's a magnificent return to form for Hammer productions and will continue to creep you out long after the last credit had rolled.

I was disappointed; not entirely sure I believe the character would not have latched onto what was going on a lot sooner; or that the character would (after the 1st episode alone in the house), be willing to stay in the house overnight; nor do I believe he would be the only one willing to return the child to it's mother and what a disappointing end.

  • Fine drama, plenty of Eeek moments

A very slow burner, and that'll be an issue for many. Dark, brooding and really captures the sense of dread of the locals in the plot. Daniel Radcliffe turns in a fine dramatic performance in the quite extensive non speaking periods of the movie. Unfortunately he can't quite deliver the same dramatic impact when he is speaking. Plenty of jumps and cushion hiding moments.

Totally different from the book without need. Instead of watching a vibrant man's life decline into tragedy, we begin with the lead character already a broken man - this script didn't give Daniel Radcliffe much opportunity for acting anything other than miserable. The directing was very ropey in places too, with virtually no subtlety or build up to a climactic moment - just cheap shocks one after the other, and over-acting from supporting actors and extras all round. I was really looking forward to seeing this film, and wanted it to be enjoyable. But I found myself incredulous at the cloying acting, pedantic script, and amateurish direction. The technical sides were the only things going for it - lighting, sets, locations, costume and makeup all fine (apart from earning the Oscar for biggest and most unnecessary use of cobweb spray ever). What makes the original story, and indeed the (perhaps now dated) TV movie frightening, is the idea that this ghost story could be borderline true. In these versions, the Woman seldom appears, and there is only a hint of the boy - but when the ghosts do appear, they definitely pack a punch. Adding in cheap shocks and ridiculous effects only lessen the impact. It depresses me that films can have so much money spent on them, with a good story already there, and still totally balls it up. In short, bad script, bad directing, bad acting.

What a waste of time. Slow, predictable and boring. Only the ending was worth watching. Not the right role for Daniel Radcliffe either.

A good movie and Daniel Radcliffe was perfect for the part. I'm not giving it a really high as I'm not a horror fan but why did they decide to make it a 12 It's not a kids film, defiantly a 15.
