Producer George Pal followed up his tom thumb with another fairy-tale picture, but this musical fantasy about the master storytellers was inflated for the giant screen Cinerama process and thereby lost most of its potential lightness and charm. Two rather humourless actors, Laurence Harvey and Karl Boehm, play the writer brothers in a framing story for three of their tales. Some excellent puppetry and animation are featured in the imaginary fables, most notably Buddy Hackett's transformation in The Singing Bone and the elves in the cobbler's shop. Mary Wills won an Oscar for her costumes.
Saccharine, heavy-handed pantomime with insufficient comedy, menace or spectacle.
