    Entertaining and silly

This is a collection of some of the most imaginitive, memorable and just plain silly music videos ever made. You get the Beastie Boys running around in fake moustaches and bad clothes pretending they're in a 70's cop show, you get a seriously inept dance troupe bothering a cinema queue to the sounds of Fatboy Slim, Weezer playing 'Buddy Holly' in an episode of 'Happy Days', Christopher Walken dancing around an empty hotel (and flying through the air): If any of this sounds familiar (or just interesting) watch this.

Most of the videos have commentaries, which can give an insight into how things got done - like the Pharcyde learning to perform their track backwards in order to get the whole backwards-video thing working, or Beastie Boys talking about where the original idea came from and what they had to cut.

The second side of this DVD has a collection of odds and ends and a handful of short documentaries, including one where the dance troupe from the Fatboys Slim video prepare for a performance at the MTV awards. This is quite amusing, mostly because the dodgy-bearded troupe leader is really Spike Jonze and a lot of the people they encounter don't know, although if you look at the dance moves you'd think it'd be pretty obvious... I found it funny, anyway.

It's shame there aren't more songs on here (as with the Michele Gondry collection), I think Jonze has filmed hundreds of songs and perhaps one or two could have replaced some of the weaker efforts on this DVD - the Chemical Brothers video featuring Jonze's then-wife Sofia Coppola doing gymnastics is different (and well performed), but I'm not sure it's a good music video.

There are 3 titles in the 'Director' series, and the Michele Gondy is the one to watch first. The ideas are better and stranger, and there are more videos(on both sides of the disc). The Chris Cunningham DVD is good, but uses only one side of the disc and there aren't many videos, although the quality is very high.

    Iconic music videos

I loved this. If, like me, you didn't have MTV in the 90's you'll have missed out on these iconic music videos. Jonze has a really quirky creativity so these aren't flashy, over-produced star vehicles. Many of them explore a simple idea that pushes the performers to the limits rather than the technology, like The Pharcyde apparently living in a backwards world. Listen to the commentaries to find out how these were done, often in a single take. Other stand-out tracks include Fat Boy Slim's 'Praise You', The Beastie Boys' 'Sabotage' and Christopher Walken's smooth dancing in 'Weapon of Choice'.

Also included are some rareties and documentaries which present you with a view of someone's life, presented honestly and without judgement. Jonze has an unobtrusive way of letting people feel very relaxed in front of the camera and letting them speak for themselves. A man with real talent and a huge love for life.

Jonze waiting for Wild Things paycheque

    • 28 Mar 2009

Filmmaker Spike Jonze is hoping his forthcoming movie Where The Wild Things Are is a box office hit - because he has yet to be paid for the four years he spent labouring over the project. The director is currently putting the finishing touches to the film, a big screen adaptation of the popular children's book by Maurice Sendak. And Jonze is hoping audiences will love the movie and flock to see it in droves when it is released in October (09) - so he can finally earn a paycheque for his... Read more
