Micky Rourke is just mesmerizing.

A really immersive film, that manages to live the washed out wrestlers life day by agonizing day. I have only felt this level of emotional gutting once before and that was with my first view of 'Requiem for a Dream'. The world feels authentic and sometimes sexy, honoring its source material, in all it's bloody glory.
Mickey Rourke's performance is absolutely incredible and it hurts so much to stare at such a demolished incarnation of him. Marisa Tomei is beautiful and again like with the every other aspect of the film you find yourself just staring in amazement.
The film has a dark sense of humor which surprises you during the lows. You can see the turns ahead but ride is too immersive to let yourself second guess the plot, and your first time will be heart throbbing and unnerving.- Was this review helpful to you?

Based on a professional wrestler Randy Robinson (Rourke) who is well past his best, but still lives for the thrill of the performance; now reduced to performing in local community centre to earn a living. Unable to maintain any relationship, he attempts to build something with his daughter (Wood) and his girlfriend, an exotic dancer Cassidy (Tomei); but his heart lies in the ring, and even a heart attack won't stop that desire. Excellent performance

I've seen a few reviews saying that this film isn't suitable of children and they had to turn it off, quick reminder it is rated a 15.- Was this review helpful to you?

Packs a punch

The film is made by Rourke who appears inevery scene like a one man show. it is a sad and poignant story with the Rourke character as a bit of a pathetic loner has been who knows no other life. He struggles to build a modest relationship with a lap dancer and repair his non existent relationship with his estranged daughter. Very credible and dark and moving.- Was this review helpful to you?

O'Rourke good, story average.
By a customer , 15 Mar 2013No doubt that O'Rourke, appearing in every scene, is a tour de force, but the story just isn't strong enough to carry the film beyond average. For example there's no explanation, nor depth - beyond two scenes (reconciliation then rejection) to the relationship with his estranged Daughter - so it feels like this is an unnecessary storyline within the main storyline of O'Rourke having a heart attack after a wrestling match and retiring and then returning to the ring for a 20-year anniversary re-match. Filmed more like a TV documentary, it feels like a 1hr documentary taking 1 and 3/4hrs with lots of shots from the back following O'Rourke, it's a good film, but not a great film.- Was this review helpful to you?
