A mock film noir from Jim McBride who directed the remake of Breathless, with Kevin Anderson mistakenly thought to be a murderer — well, he's found standing over a dead body with a gun in his hand. On the run in Mexico, Anderson links up with married couple Rosanna Arquette and John Lithgow. Elements of Touch of Evil, Build My Gallows High and, especially, The Postman Always Rings Twice, hover over the plot as Anderson and Arquette take a shine to each other. By turns funny, tense and sexy, the cast is excellent and, despite its flaws, the picture which premiered at Cannes in 1993 deserved better than just an airing on American cable TV.

True but downbeat story from the headlines, filmed with remarkably little persuasion; not its director's métier despite evidence of his usual thoroughness.

The Essential Guide to Alfred Hitchcock

The Essential Guide to Alfred Hitchcock Born 1899, Leytonstone, England Died 1980, Bel Air, USA More books have been written about Alfred Hitchcock than any other filmmaker, alive or dead. He was the self-styled “master of suspense”. In a career that stretched to half a century, he directed more than 50 films – and rarely strayed from his favourite genre. The son of a grocer, and a devout Catholic, Hitchcock often attributed his fascination with (and fear of) the law,... Read more
