Most helpful review The Yards

  • A Yard From Brilliance

    Rated - 4.0 stars
By David Levy from Totteridge, London , 31 Jul 2005

    [Highly rated reviewer]

In short, The Yards is an excellent movie. Echoing such exemplary films as The Godfather, Casino and Carlito's Way, and featuring a sensational performance from Joaquim Phoenix, The Yards entertains, thrills and provides enough twists and turns to make the near two hours fly by.

All of it is anchored by a fine Mark Whalberg. Equaling his work in Boogie Nights, he superbly walks the line between vulnerable and inner strength. Joining the stellar supporting cast are James Caan, Charlize Theron and Faye Dunaway - each of them on top of their game.

The Yards comes with a hearty recommendation for anyone who wishes to watch a heartfelt, gripping story of a man trying to reclaim his life.

  • Different....

    Rated - 3.0 stars
By Steve Hatton from Cornwall, England , 04 Jan 2012
In places, a bit pedestrian and predictable, and in other moments, a brooding and atmospheric masterpiece. Caan is in fine form, as is Whalberg, and this assists in keeping the viewer riveted. 3 *'s seems a bit low, but doesn't quite manage to raise itself to a 4 - wish there was an 'out of 10' option.....

  • one to miss

I hoped this film would be good as it has a well known cast. However i was very disappointed with it. It was very slow, dull and i struggled to understand it. I watched this film with my friend and we both decided after an hour, enough was enough and switched it off.

  • good acting but not for me

I could appreciate the good acting but the story was depressing and slow. The characters mumbled so it was hard to hear what they were saying and so my attention strayed.

  • Spoilt by poor post-production

This was a good film with some strong acting and an interesting plot. However, as everyone spoke in hushed mono-tone voices, you couldn't really hear what was being said half the time...

  • Great actors, predictable film

    Rated - 1.5 stars
By filmanation (34 reviews) from Slough , 11 Jul 2010
The film had great actors from Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron & Joachim Pheonix but the film itself didn't live up to it's billing.

The story was slow and even the highlights of the film didn't changed the mood of the film.

All in all it was predictable and could of been so much better..
