This Second World War potboiler, adapted by Edward Anhalt from the doorstop novel by Irwin Shaw, oozes self-importance in every scene. The action leapfrogs from Paris to America and from North Africa to Bavaria, taking nearly three hours to unravel. But, while the script is turgid and Edward Dmytryk's direction often slows to a crawl, the picture is an absolute corker for three reasons: Marlon Brando as a straw-blond nice guy, who becomes a Nazi and ends up a martyr, Montgomery Clift as a Jewish GI and Dean Martin as a cowardly Broadway star who's Clift's fellow draftee. They fight over women (Hope Lange, May Britt), over principles, and overact only some of the time, as they stumble towards a climax where irony rules the day.
Three strands are loosely interwoven into a would-be modern epic; the result is well mounted and generally absorbing but uneven and decidedly overlong.
This film basically encapsulates the entire World War II experience into one film. Brando plays a German officer who completely loyal to the Nazi regime and movement, however is troubled by some crude aspects of it. The film also follows the life of a New York club owner (played by Dean Martin)who is terrified of entering the war and sees it as an inappropriate way of 'getting shot'. Overall the film is well shot and original. We see another superb performance from Marlon Brando, who confirms his ability to adapt to any role he is given. There wasn't really much I didn't like about the film, so I'm gonna go ahead and give it 5 stars.
Black and white films always have an extra dimension I think. Although this film is obviously dated Marlon Brando gave a good performance as did Montgomery Clift. I enjoyed seeing the film again.
