Jackie Chan embarked on his first film for the famous Golden Harvest studio without a completed script and there's an inescapable sense of muddle and make-do throughout this comedy/action tale set in the Chinese city of Guangzhou in the early 1920s. Chan (who also co-wrote and directed the picture) plays a raw martial arts student who's forced to fight for the honour of his school after the defection of its most accomplished champion. It's pretty standard stuff, but the lively mix of slapstick, criminality and sentimentality and the flying fists of Chan, Wei Pai and longtime collaborator Yuan Biao ensure entertainment aplenty.

    Very good fight scenes

An average movie in terms of its story. Standard old skool style. However the fight scenes are really very, very good. The end battle between Jackie and Yuen are incredible. Definately worth watching.

    Poor Acting, Great Fighting

This really is a terrific fighting film, but thats about it. The acting and dubbing are poor as can be expected, but the fighting really, really does make up for it.

The action is brilliantly choreographed and amazingly well done. Some of the scenes are breathtaking and I had to restrain myself from doing the usual porn watching trick of forwarding past the tragic excuse for a plot in order to find the next fight, which to be honest is never far away. Although even after watching the whole plot I'm finding it hard to recall any of it. The fight scenes however will stick in your mind for years to come, forget the modern special effects rubbish, check this out for sheer brilliance, you won't regret it!
