    [Highly rated reviewer]

A slow movie even for the continental, 80s style of cinema, more like a Greek tragedy than modern cinema. The slow pace allows for lots of pauses to take in the scenery or lingering over a well constructed scene that are more like paintings than photos. The essence of the story is simple, a middle aged man, grown-up family with too much history not dealt with and the weight of generations looking after bees, but the allegories, metaphors and such references run deep to satisfy any film critic.

The acting is mixed, much of it seemed contrived especially the way emotions are signposted, but this is part of the cinematic style of the time & place; the main characters are believable and real, which is essential. There's much left unsaid and unresolved, but again this is a continental style - not everything in life has an explanation.

This is not action-led, it is sub-titled and some scenes are uncomfortable, but I don't think you can help but feel sorry for the guy as he tries to come to terms with his own mortality. Watch it, if you can bear the pace, language and style, use the x1. 5 playback wisely and you'll probably enjoy it more than you might expect. Some of the scenes are breathtakingly beautiful.

Marcello Mastrioianni is a middle aged man in the grip of terminal emptiness. The settings are mainly petrol stations and sad rooming houses in Greek towns. Beautifully photographed. A muffled, deeply interior film. (1986)
