The comparisons to Quentin Tarantino's work are inevitable, but this witty, hip take on the gangster movie marked director Gary Fleder out as an individual talent to watch. Andy Garcia plays a retired mobster who is called in by his ailing former boss, Christopher Walken, to carry out one more job. When it goes badly wrong, Garcia and his associates find themselves on the hit list. The vivid splashes of violence are ably handled by Fleder, but he also delights in the rich dialogue of his oddball collection of characters. They are warmly brought to life by an eclectic cast that includes William Forsythe, Steve Buscemi, Christopher Lloyd and Treat Williams, who gives a career-reviving performance as an ex-boxer who works out on the corpses at a funeral parlour.
"...A grave noir comedy heavy with romantic regret....Even in this impressive group Treat Williams stand out for the bravado of his performance..."
What a story! What a cast. What a movie. If it's realism you want, then sure, Scorcese's cool. For entertainment value give me Denver or the Dogs every time!
An awesome insight of a post - Goodfellows scenario without the gory gangster edge.
The story is of Jimmy the Saint, an ex-gangster who is now trying to make a normal life for himself, finding love. But unfortunately his old boss wants one last job to be done....which as you have guessed goes hideously wrong.
There is a fine edge to all angles of this film, whether you want romantic, comedy, action, or just good old fashioned gangster, watch it and be thrilled.
