Former cinematographer Rodrigo Garcia's feature debut is a set of five loosely overlapping stories that concentrates exclusively on the female characters. However, though blessed with a fine cast of performers, this film didn't get a cinematic release in the United States and only goes to show that distributors underestimate their audience and their ability to see A-list actresses in a new light. So what if Glenn Close is a lonely doctor, tending a senile mother and obsessing about men? So what if Holly Hunter is an adulteress with an unwanted pregnancy? Yes, Calista Flockhart is a lesbian nursing her dying lover and Cameron Diaz is a blind bitch undermining her seeing sister's confidence. But that's what makes this movie original, interesting and an honest appraisal of contemporary women's issues. Difficult and different shouldn't mean this film doesn't get seen.
