Most helpful review Thirteen Days

  • Tense, compelling

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Recent events come alive with tense, believable account of the one side (the USA) of the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, which was as near as the world has come to superpower nuclear conflict. Costner excels in an understated, curiously passive, onlooker role; the acting pyrotechnics are from Greenwood as JFK and Culp as RFK.

Great film for smart kids (and adults) with an interest in history, current events, politics.

  • Very good docudrama.

Captures the terror of the Cuban crisis , and puts the spin on it that Kennedy resisted the hawks in his team and resisted the temptation to leap to war. Kevin Costner is excellent in this , but Bruce Greenwood as Kennedy whilst he looks the part , comes across as a bit quiet and lacking in presence. He is portrayed as a very thoughtful cerebral man rather than a strong leader. His script was a bit lacking too. The overal film though is still very good, and very watchable although a little long. Recommended.

An absorbing account of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Like Apollo 13, even though you know how it ends, the tension is maintained throughout. Some people have complained that the film only puts the American side, but that also leaves the motivations of the USSR as uncertain and mysterious to the audience as it was to the President and his advisors, and their reaction just as uncertain. I'm not normally a fan of Kevin Kostner, but he's not too bad in this one, standing in as a composite of Kennedy's 'Irish Mafia' - Boston Irish advisors who were part of the inner circle. The only real downer in the film are the mawkish scenes with Kostner's family, which while attempting to give a human face to the jeopardy really just ladle on the sentimentality. On the other hand, the film does a good job of making antiquated 60s technology look as cutting edge as it would have been at the time.

A brilliant film that captures the stark reality of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The most poignant moment was where JFK writes to the family of the US pilot shot down over Cuba.
