Anyone who doubts Leonardo DiCaprio's acting abilities should check out this moving coming-of-age drama. In this troubling tale set in Seattle in the 1950s, DiCaprio plays the rebellious teenage son of working mum Ellen Barkin, who finds himself locked in a battle of wills with bullying stepfather Robert De Niro. After the lightweight antics of his first American movie, Doc Hollywood, British director Michael Caton-Jones relishes the opportunity to try out meatier material and makes the most of Robert Getchell's largely unsentimental adaptation of Tobias Wolff's acclaimed autobiography. Although Caton-Jones doesn't flinch from showing the brutality of the relationship between DiCaprio, De Niro and Barkin, he still finds room for some quirky slices of humour and neatly avoids the overwrought melodrama lurking within the material. De Niro is as impressive as usual, succeeding in being both frighteningly monstrous and faintly absurd. Barkin is equally good, but this is DiCaprio's show: mature beyond his years, he is movingly believable as the confused, abused teen.
"...[DiCaprio fights De Niro] to an honorable draw, something few performers, and no other teenager, could do..." -- Rating: A
"...Nicely acted....De Niro brings both a rough charm and ferocious power to Dwight....Leonardo DiCaprio is excellent..."
I'm not really a DiCaprio fan but his part in This boys life is excellent. He plays a teenage boy being moved around by his mother.
I found this film very moving with some parts quite shocking.
The fight scene in the kitchen between step father and step son was class.
Thumbs up
after sitting through titanic and admittedly enjoying it i thought i'd look up some other films starring the wonder boy. i recently saw an interview with martin scorsesse who said that this film was the reason he gave di caprio the lead in aviator and it's easy to see why even the brilliant de niro can't out act di caprio very very good film
The film sees Leonardo De Caprio in his first major role. He plays a teenage child who is dragged-along from one town to another by his mum. Robert De Niro's role as step-dad brings out the best in De Caprio's role. The film highlights some of the major concerns of single-parent families. Especially, in De Caprio's early teens he is involved with causing mayhem amongst his neighbours and at school. Although De Niro's strict rule confines this delinquent behaviour, his temper get the better of him and de Caprio and mum is left with no alternative.

Had heard the acting from De Niro and Di Capprio was very good - its true - it really is an excllent drama. De Niro is outstanding and Di Capprio is highly rated by many of the already proven greats. Di Capprio has been disappointing in things like Gangs of New York but if you liked Basket Ball diaries then this is more of the same from him.
Brilliant acting by all. Very moving.
This is a brilliant movie. The acting is great especially from young Leonardo DiCaprio. The book is also very good and the movie sticks pretty closely to it. Definitely worth a watch.
Worth watching, typical step-parent picking on the innocent son.
Very moving. Leonardo DiCaprio should stick to the character roles which he is excellent at.
Love this film - Leonardo Di Caprio and Robert De Niro are wonderful in it! Highly recommended, especially for De Niro fans

An escapist drama, in which a series of dramatic confrontations fail to carry the power they should.
