Fantasy adventure story The Golden Compass debuted at the top of the US box office this week, taking $25.8 million (£12.58 million) in box office receipts. According to data from the Hollywood Reporter, the movie knocked family comedy Enchanted off the top spot for the week ending December 9th. American Gangster continues UK box office reign

There was little change at the UK box office this week as Ridley Scott's New York epic American Gangster stayed at number one for the second week. According to AC Nielsen, the weekend beginning November 23rd saw the film take another £1.82 million in receipts, putting it ahead of Beowulf once again.
