Caan portrays a disillusioned Chicago high-school teacher who decides to make a pilgrimage to Ireland to learn the truth about his father, whom he never met. He takes along his troubled nephew, who spends his days falling in love with a local school girl. The film shifts between the present and the past, as we learn the story of what happened to Caan's father. A Quinn Brothers trifecta (Paul wrote and directed, Aidan acted, and Declan photographed), this is a personal - though not autobiographical - tale that rises above Clicheland due to the subtle, heartwarming performances.

Compelling drama, with teacher James Caan learning a life lesson when a photo from his mother's past causes him to wonder about the identity of his father. This search for truth takes him to Ireland, where details of an unsuspected past romance emerge. Written and directed by Paul Quinn, and starring brother Aidan, James Caan, Stephen Rea, John Cusack and a who's who of Irish supporting actors.
"...A beautiful, heart-wrenching tale....THIS IS MY FATHER is a rewarding film of healing and a most personal, impassioned work on the part of Paul, Aidan and Declan Quinn..."
James Caan plays Kieran Johnson a middle-aged schoolteacher who makes a pilgramage to Ireland where he hopes to discover the truth about his mysterious dad.
What he digs up, in flashback, is a Romeo & Juliet love affair blighted by class, religion & sheer human meanness.
Aiden Quinn plays his dad, Kieran O'Day, a farmhand, slow, inarticulate, pure of heart, who fell in love above his station.
Moya Farrelly plays Fiona, the girl he falls for.
First she amuses herself by drawing Quinn's locked-down soul into chats, dancing & friendship, then coming to love the complex man she has freed from loneliness.
But her jealous, unloving mother (Gina Moxley) & a self-hating clergyman (Stephen Rea) set their sights on killing the couple's happiness.
It will make you cry but it reminds you of what in the end is most important.
Set in modern America and old Ireland this is a tragic love story tinted with moments of humour and feel good factor.
Low on sex and violence a film that you will feel was worth watching!
