Glorious But Gruelling

This is an epic movie, telling the story of a general from his beginnings as a humble soldier to his final stand against overwhelming odds, interwoven with his relationship to both his royal masters and his old hometown comrade. And it is absolutely stunning. Visually it's a feast, with gorgeous landscapes, wonderful sets, and huge, panoramic battles. The acting couldn't be better, and Sammo Hung gives the performance of his career. It can be painful to watch, not because it's bad but because the ending is inevitable, and you actually don't want these people to suffer the way they do. A magnificent, moving, stirring film.

A masterpiece.

This films tells the story of two soldiers who are from the same village fighting in China's Civil war. Ultimately one of the soldiers gets promoted and is revered back home while the other falls a little to the wayside. After over thirty years of fighting he comes to realise that all his efforts have been for nothing and the war itself had achieved very little other than going around a big circle. Someone should send a copy to Gordon Brown. A really good film with excellent cinematography, superb sequences and a well established team of actors and directed faultlessly. Four and a half stars not five because dispite being a really good actor and performer I can't help but feel Samo Hung was a little off form with this one and look out for Vanessa Wu in many many films to come. I hope you enjoy the film as much as I did. Rob
