(5)in america they han' 'em
By juradino (811 reviews) from London , 10 Jul 2012TV mini series in three parts that gives account of late 17th century witchunts in Salem. All in all it is about 155 minutes of wholesome family erudition on its subject. It is smooth alternative to Witchfinder General made in 1985 and guess what, they had church with no cross on it that looked more like barn. Puritan indeed.- Was this review helpful to you?

Worthy but uninspiring
By Cheggers81 (24 reviews) from Chichester , 03 Sep 2011I found this to be a rather dry, solemn and uninvolving plod through the events of the Salem witch trials - in fact it was remarkable to see how such an emotive and fascinating historical episode could be rendered so lifelessly.
I can't really think of a positive thing to say about it, it was just deeply unsatisfying on every level. None of the characters are really developed enough to carry the plot, so this is instead delivered at tedious length through Vanessa Redgrave's voice over. The acting and dialogue throughout is decidedly ropey, and it never comes anywhere near conveying the sheer horror and madness of the trials.
In summary, a dull, leaden piece of work devoid of any traces of invention or creativity.- Was this review helpful to you?

Justice at last
By barbi (150 reviews) from Salisbury , 16 Mar 2007Everybody has heard of the Salem witch trials; generally you'd think of the Crucible and the treatment of the witches being a parallel for other crimes against innocent people. This version of the story, without taking an aggressively political stand, shows the events from the point of view of one of the women who was falsely accused. It gives a far better insight into the human aspects of the tragedy. Vanessa Redgrave plays Sarah, determined to take her case to the highest courts to win justice not only for herself but for her two sisters who were hanged.- Was this review helpful to you?
