Tim Burton's Corpse Bride

In the same vein as Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare Before Christmas, Tim Burton continues to combine wholesome comedy and creepy horror with this tale of a mild-mannered Victorian gentleman, Victor (Johnny Depp), who accidentally marries a mysterious corpse bride (Helena Bonham-Carter) instead of his intended, Victoria (Emily Watson). Victor soon discovers that the Land of the Dead holds more fun than frights and begins to fall in love with his innocent bride. Meanwhile, Victoria has been drawn into a scam of a marriage and may not escape with her life. As time runs out for everyone, can there be a resolution where everyone gets what he or she deserves? Building on their past productive relationship (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, ED WOOD), Tim Burton and Johnny Depp create a colourful riot of a film that revives the increasingly rare method of stop-motion animation. Over the period of 10 years that Burton worked to complete the film, new techniques were created to speed the process, including a new way to change the character models' facial expressions by using gears in their heads. Of particular note is the lilting score by Danny Elfman, another longtime Burton collaborator. Fun for adults and children, CORPSE BRIDE is another welcome walk through Tim Burton's twisted mind.

  • As an achievement in macabre visual wizardry, TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE has to reckoned some sort of marvel... A sculpted musical dreamscape of kiddie-gothic expressionist design.

    • Entertainment Weekly
  • The visuals are dazzling and the characters vividly rendered in caricature fashion. Danny Elfman's score may be his best yet, with songs that are witty and melodic.

    tim burton does it again....

i love tim burton films particularly when johnny depp is starring in them, so i could not wait to see this film. i was not disappointed it is amazing. it has a gothic feel to it, but still is witty and has an emotional edge to it. johnny depp is brilliant as the voice of the hapless hero, and the song and dance routines are fabulous.

this is well worth renting out.

    Dead Funny

It is the sign that a filmmaker has truly reached auteur status when his name prefixes the title of the feature. This, his twelfth feature film, everything about Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride is Burton-esque whilst proving remarkably fresh and fun. Arguably better than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory released only a few months ago to massive box office returns.

Corpse Bride tells the macabre tale of Vincent Van Dort (voiced by Burton alumni Johnny Depp) who unwittingly marries a dead lady (voiced by a quirky Helena Bonham-Carter) and his ensuing attempt to escape and get back to his true love (voiced by a very sweet Emily Watson) without hurting the cadaver’s feelings.

The stop motion animation is sublime, with character design that wouldn’t look out of place among Burton’s book of gothic tales, The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy.

Interestingly the look of the film is a reverse of another Burton film, Beetle Juice. Instead of the afterlife being depicted as grey and blue contrasted with the living world being bright and sunny, in Corpse Bride the reverse is true.

On the downside the story is fairly predictable, catering more for a younger audience, but this adds to the familiar nature of the film, seeming more like a gothic fairy tale like Edward Scissorhands or Sleepy Hollow. The four musical numbers in the film are also a let down, with the quieter piano solos performed by the two main characters much more effective.

Corpse Bride leaves Wallace And Gromit for dead

    • 10 Mar 2006

Despite winning an Oscar on Sunday, it seems Nick Park couldn't convince judges at the British Animation Awards to honour Wallace And Gromit with the title of best feature film. Aardman's latest feature film Curse Of The Were-Rabbit was pipped to the post by Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. The stop-motion animation, set in the 19th century, follows Vincent Van Dort as he is whisked to the underworld to marry a mysterious woman who died on her wedding day. The film is voiced by a long list of... Read more
