    [Highly rated reviewer]

ARTHOUSE PSUEDO STYLE WITH NO SENSE OF IRONY, MIKE FIGGIS AT HIS WORST. THIS FILM HAS NO REDEEMING FEATURES, IT'S PURELY AN EXCERCISE IN DIRECTORIAL 'NAVEL GAZING'. SPLIT-SCREEN USED AS A CRUTCH TO HANG AN ENTIRE PREMISE ON, IMPOSSIBLE TO FOLLOW, IMPOSSIBLE TO LIKE, IMPOSSIBLE TO WATCH. DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAGUE, THIS IS 97 MINUTES OF YOUR LIFE YOU COULD DO WITHOUT WASTING ON CINEMATIC RUBBISH LIKE THIS.

This film is absolute tripe; it's impossible to watch, difficult to follow, lacking storyline, just plain dull. Please do not waste your time.

I gave this 3 1/2 stars not so much because it's good but because it tried something new (at the time). Other people here have said about the format being a detraction and it's no wonder no-one else has tried it...

...except that the reason I watched this was that a few years ago I watched a short film (approx 8 mins) in the same style, but with 8(!) frames and it worked really well. So I don't think there's anything specifically wrong with the approach, just that Figgis didn't handle it well and would have been wise to add some real plot to a very shallow story (as such, it doesn't matter much if you miss bits).

If anyone else knows the short film I saw (set it a house with one person per room), then PLEASE mention it in a comment as it's worth other people looking out for it.

  • gimmicky waste of time irritating in earphones.

Irritating to listen to on headphones, after 10 minutes I switched this off as it was boring and doesnt really make much sense and people talking over each other gets irritating, maybe I didnt give it a chance but it just seems like a gimick, and multiple scenes of people talking over each other in your right ear and ticking in your left isnt nice especially when you have to tur the volume up just to hear them. I bet when all 4 screens are talking on headphones it must sound like an insane persons mind, 2 voices in one ear 2 in another. and when they mute things and the plot isnt making sense other than the earthquake and you can only hear in one ear.. just a huge gimmick.

  • unique experiment??

four frames of action simultaneously on the screen, competing for your attention...and filmed in real-time. This was one film where the 'making-of' doc was better than the main feature. My eyes soon attuned to having to scan the frames for action, but my ears didn't, and although the director helped by fading in and out sound from the quadrants I still felt frustrated from time-to-time, knowing that something had been missed. I am not aware that this format has ever been used again - I can see why not, but it certainly holds interesting possibilities, especially where action from one quadrant was about to converge with that in another. As for the actual story, well - drug-fuelled sexual high-jinks and relationship breakdowns. But somehow the format seemed much more interesting than the story, although there is plenty for fans of Salma Hayek to get excited about!
