This immensely likeable romantic comedy reunited Kevin Costner with his Bull Durham director Ron Shelton, a former college baseball star who has made sports movies his speciality. Costner plays Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy, the drunken, down-at-heel pro of a driving range in the back of beyond, West Texas. When Rene Russo, the girlfriend of his long-standing, more successful rival, Don Johnson, drops by for golf lessons, Roy is smitten, and since she turns out to be a therapist, she can help rid him of his inner demons. The scene is set for a suspenseful finale at the US Open with Roy looking to regain his self-respect and Russo waiting in the wings. Howard Hawks could have made this movie and would have cracked it in much less time. Nevertheless, it's an accomplished film and you don't need to be a golfer to enjoy it.

Engaging romantic comedy, ramshackle in construction but full of interesting behavourial quirks that give an individuality missing from much recent homogenized Hollywood product.

Guys - Get your Wife/Girlfriend Into Golf

Guys - Play Golf? Fed up with the wife/girlfriend moaning about not seeing you at the weekend??....then you could do worse than watch Tin Cup with her. Dim the lights, open a bottle of cheap ozzie wine. It's slow and plodding (but this allows for the occasional smootch/conversation) but more enjoyable that you may first think. Kev's made much worse. Much.
