WE'RE DEFINITELY NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE...

One of the reasons I have been asked in the past to give back my pink membership card is the fact that I have seen no more than a maximum of 15 minutes of the original Wizard Of Oz. I'm also no good with musicals. You get the picture. (I was dragged into seeing a panto production of it with my kindergarten group- early traumatic experience and apparently does not count).

So for me, who does not care much for the technicolor singalong antics of Garland and co, this is refreshingly right up my street. And it's brilliant. Why?

First of all, there's no singing, this is definitely not a musical number. Phew. Secondly, the filmmaking is just beautiful without being paint by numbers. The tone shifts between, for comparison, Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter, Spiderwick Chronicles and Lone Ranger Western. These are just touchstones of course, Tin Man has its very own distinctive style, but its the diversity of the nuances that make it much more than a two dimensional walk along some old road.

Then there is Zooey Deschanel. While sister Emily comes over all tough and business in Bones, Zooey's performances have got an air of innocence about them, without being too cute. (In 'The Happening' she felt like cheating on her husband, just because she'd had desert with someone.) Her wide eyed, yet tough when she needs to be, delivery of DeeJee (that'll be Dorothy's new format) is just pure joy. She is supported by a great motley crew, including Alan Cumming, who is indeed watchable in this. Kathleen Robertson as Askadelia, the Sorceress, is outstanding. She incorporates the many facets and layers that make Tin Man such a joy- using elements that are known, such as the Storm, the companions, the flying monkeys etc. but mixing them up, twisting and turning the original story and keeping you hooked.

Tin Man is a three part affair, clocking in at a beefy 270mins total. It is a whole evening's worth of entertainment, but I would suggest it as the perfect Sunday afternoon chill out movie.

    EXCELLENT!

    so so

i really didn't think this was that bad. All the actors played their parts and it wasn't a bad story. Having said that, i couldn't help but look at the guy who played the 'Tin Man' as an airbrushed version of 'Martin Clunes', and everytime they mentioned the 'OZEE' it sounded like the 'OC'. Other than that, very entertaining. I would suggest however, that if you enjoyed this, your far better off watching 'Merlin' with Sam Neil'. Same sh#t, different day.

And when is 'Zooey Deschanel' gonna be in something really good?

    Slightly dissapointing

The only thing I think that lets this down is..the budget they had. I kind of got the impression it was going to be one of those big budget...beautifully shot...things..like all of these American shows we have now ie: Pushing Daisies, Desperate housewives etc etc. It just seemed they scrimped a bit in certain areas which was a bit of a let down. The costumes were fantastic...some of the acting left alot to be desired...and the storyline was a bit..meh...and a bit predictable. The CGI bits were a bit silly and not very convincing either..

It is rather long so..I'm one of those people who finds it hard to commit to a whole massive thing in one go. Each part is about an hour and 20 mins so..just to warn if you were planning to do the whole thing in one sitting!

I adore the concept of the Wizard of Oz and just felt a bit dissapointed with what this was.

    :(

    Emmy awards? Are you kidding?!

Rented this with high hopes. Have enjoyed watching Alan Cumming in lots of things, mostly in child-friendly films so thought this would be good for us to watch as a family (me plus boys aged 9 + 12). After about 25 minutes we gave up.

The acting was so wooden, even Keanu 'I'm a 4 by 12' Reeves would have been more believable. Zooey Deschanel went so far towards slacker mode it was as if she just couldn't be bothered.

The dialogue was absolutely AWFUL and the sfx laughable.

A ggod premise, just hoplessly executed. How it got nominated for Emmy awards, I have no idea.

cant wait to see 2nd half!

ive seen the first half on sky and cant wait to see the second half

i do respect the changes they have made to the story and they have nicely changed it to make it more apealing to the contempary viewer, if it was just a clone of the original i dont belive i would have liked it as theres no point in doing something well made just to have it duplicated by new people as it could never compare this film could stand alone without being linked to t.w.o.oz

    Tin Man 1 & 2

AS someone who remembers well the original Wizard of Oz I was surprised to find this film to be excellent { I was expecting the normal poorer sequel }, full of ingenuity, and although it was more 'magical' than the original it was/ is a terrific film. I loved the way tattoos came to life as monkey faced bats and a tin man who lived in a Divers suit., until released and Vulcan mind meld plus a little dog who transforms into a large amiable black man etc etc .This is a great film with a host of imaginative ideas and as normal good finally overcomes evil. A very clever modern film for all the family
