Or you can rent each disc individually:
this is the opposite of dumbed down TV. It's intelligent, understated, beautifully acted and brilliantly scripted.
Based on the John Le Carre novel of the same name, this is a faithful adaptation which doesn't insult the intelligence of the viewer by explaining the hard bits as it goes.
This is one of the finest drama series produced by the BBC over the last 30 years. They honestly don't make them like this anymore - Savour it !
The second half of the adaptation of John le Carre's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is absolutely brilliant. So brilliant I am almost tempted to downgrade everything else I have rated at 7 to 6, just so this stands out!
It is based on the ultimate spy thriller, with Smiley (Alec Guinness) trying to find out which senior British spy is a soviet mole. On this disc, Smiley digs deeper into a failed operation in the Czech republic and eventually unmasks the Soviet mole. The final episode - which is largely a conversation between Smiley and the Mole is superb - in that it uncovers the motivations and character of people like Kim Philby.
The disc also contains a really good one hour documentary by the BBC on John le Carre. It covers his time as a spy in Bern and Bonn, his dealings with Kim Philby and his career as a writer.
