A classic costume ...
By Bunnygirl#1 from RUISLIP MANOR , 16 Jan 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
A classic costume drama about lesbian love in Victorian times. If you can get past laughing out loud at the lead characters fake, deep voice then you will find a ripping good story, which moves from the dance halls to poverty and then back up again. Fundamentally, it's a love story that's well acted and beautifully shot.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer , 17 Mar 2013Excellent watch. I enjoyed Fingersmith, so had to watch this as it is by the same author. Interesting stories, good acting (except the weird voice of the lead. Husband enjoyed it as well.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good BBC drama/romance
By brokenking (255 reviews) from Bristol , 16 Aug 2012Romance stories aren't really my thing, so if I'm going to watch one there has to be something about it that will make me pay attention. Not to put to fine a point on it, Tipping the Velvet had lesbians in the 19th century. But the story is geniuely good and the romance is believable as Nan goes through the highs and lows or life trying to find love with someone.
Even without the raunch this would still would have been a good watch, though I probably would have skipped truth be told.- Was this review helpful to you?

Bold ... and very well acted
By a customer , 15 Feb 2012It surprised me that the BBC were responsible for the production of this drama as it was quite bold in places. 'Tipping the Velvet' had just about everything but I have to admit I'm biased as I'm into costume drama in a big way ... and this is one of the best I've seen ... very authentic for the 1890's.
There could not have been better casting in having Keeley Hawes and Rachael Stirling team up to take on the main roles. They worked well together. I haven't read to book that lead to the filming of this series by the BBC, but the storyline was superb and well acted out by all those concerned. All credit must therefore go to Geoffry Sax.
'Tipping the Velvet' consists of 3 episodes that happen to be on one disc. Give youself a treat and view them all in one evening. Great entertainment.- Was this review helpful to you?
