The story is a classic bildungsroman, following the journey of Cale, a young man who holds the destiny of humankind in his hand--literally. Opening with the stunning destruction of earth as seen from space, the film launches the audience into a seamlessly imagined universe in which the alien Drej have turned humans into homeless emigres, searching desperately for a new world. Cale (voiced by Matt Damon) is haunted by the legacy of his father, who abandoned him but created the spaceship Titan, which holds the key to the new home of humankind. With the plan for Titan imprinted in his hand, Cale is swept from a life of lonely drudgery devoid of female companionship into the colorful crew of mysterious Captain Korso (voiced by Bill Pullman). On the Valkyrie ship, Cale enjoys Korso's crew, including the kind, beautiful, and expert woman pilot Akima (voiced by Drew Barrymore) along with a strange but fascinating band of aliens.

Talk about starting with a bang! Don Bluth (The Land Before Time, An American Tail) kicks off this animated spectacular with nothing less than the blowing-up of the Earth, forcing survivors Cale (voiced by Matt Damon) and Akima (Drew Barrymore) to put one over on the offending aliens by reactivating a hidden spacecraft, the eponymous Titan. Three parts Star Wars to one part Star Trek, Titan AE (After Earth in case you were wondering) imaginatively blends top-quality cel and digital animation, resulting in something well beyond mere eye candy for kids. One particularly glorious scene has ephemeral space angels riding the bow wake of a starship in the same way that dolphins ride the bow waves of boats.
Had the narrative, characterisation and dialogue matched the often imaginative backgrounds and animation, this might have been the movie to break free from Disney's dominance of American animation; unfortunately, it's just an interesting failure.
Sci Fi predictable yarn told fashionably well through a mix of intense computer graphics and so-so hand painted animation. Hopelessly tainted cliches underscore some impressive cinematic sequences that have to be seen to be believed. Of the Treasure planet variety of escapism without the niceties of good animation. I would watch it again for the CGI alone.
A good animation with excellent effects. Entertaining for all the family. The usual battle between good and the not so good. Worth watching.
